Sports Medicine Fellowship
Under the leadership of Dr. Tom Howard, Fellowship Director, the program
offers a competitive fellowship experience in Sports Medicine. The program
draws on experiences with local orthopedists, local professional, college and
high school sports teams, and academic work with the medical school of Uniformed
Services University to provide intensive training in musculoskeletal medicine.
The program accepts 2 fellows per year for a 1 year training program. The
curriculum includes 2 half days of sports clinic under the supervision of a
fellowship trained attending and one half day of continuity clinic. Fellows
spend 2 days with Town Center Orthopedics with both outpatient and operative
experience. This group is unique in it’s continuing support of the fellowship
as well their office includes General Orthopedics, Sports, Spine, Foot and Ankle,
Hand and Upper Extremity and PM&R in their practice. For academics and research
the fellowship enjoys an ongoing relationship with a well established military
sports Fellowship at the Uniformed Services Medical School at Bethesda, Maryland.
Fellows participate in an intensive didactic program with 2 hours of lecture,
orthopedic grand rounds, faculty development and work with the Human Performance
Lab on a weekly basis. Additional experiences include training and ongoing
experience with Musculoskeletal Ultrasound for diagnostics and guided injections,
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy for tendinopathies,
Exercise Stress Testing and Orthopedic Tumor Clinic.
The fellows are very active with team and event coverage at various levels. Each
fellow will function as a high school team physician as well they will share
coverage of Marymount University. Fellows will also be involved with training room
coverage for the DC United and Washington Redskins. Finally, the fellowship covers
the DC Divas Woman’s Football Team.
The fellows are additionally actively involved in the planning and execution of
coverage for the Marine Corps Marathon, Army 10-Milers, Reston Triathlon and severe
